Guest Room Office Combo Makeover How to Design A Multipurpose Guest Room

This will give your guests the option of an extra layer of warmth on chillier nights while adding a decorative touch. Find more office/guest room ideas in our Bedroom Furniture Essentials checklist. I’m embarrassed to even post these photos, but of course you want to see what this now office and guest room looked like before I made it over. The prior owners used it as a dance studio- hence the wood floors and floor-to-ceiling mirror wall. With open shelving, the room looks a little more convertible between office and guest room modes. Anything that normally goes on the desk can be tucked away into a basket and placed on the shelf for easy access once your guest departs.

A small white table in the corner was the perfect spot to place a gold and white lamp, plus some greenery to add a naturally calming feel. I added in a few other pieces of greenery around the room, pulling inspiration from Island Time . To create the illusion of a larger space, I hung a low-profile mirror above the sleeper sofa. The gold trim was also a perfect match for my other gold accents! Over the sideboard, I opted to create a collage of frames and other decor that would both be interesting to our guests and inspiring to me as I work.

Considerations for a Multipurpose Guest Room

Any guest room that doubles as a home office must strike a balance between welcoming and professional. Too much of either, and the space will feel either too cold or too chaotic. One of the best ways to avoid this is to incorporate decor into the room to create a curated ambiance. Hang a few pieces of artwork on the walls to add color and interest without overwhelming the space. Plants and florals are also always a welcoming addition to any room of the house.

Office and Guest Room Combo: How to Create a Double-Duty Space

A mirrored closet keeps the interior clean, uncluttered, and appear more spacious. 180-degree hinges enable the doors to completely open, creating a comfortable and functional workspace. A condo in Ottawa features a sleek and stylish office and guest room. A wall of built-in storage conceals a bed that folds down as a comfortable guest bed. A small condo uses a second bedroom as an office and occasional guest bedroom. A Case Study Day Bed by Modernica can be used to accommodate an overnight guest.

This guest room office from Jessica Lagrange Interiors has a spacious bedside table desk and tufted ottoman that offers guests a place to rest their bones that isn't the bed. The room can serve as a quiet spot for Zoom calls or short work sessions when guests aren't in town. Or if working from home becomes a more frequent proposition, you can tuck the ottoman under the desk and bring in an office chair without changing the layout. While an ergonomic desk chair is the best option for long hours of stationary work, using more comfortable upholstered chairs will create a cozy spot to do punctual work from home. Adding bold color is an easy way to personalize your home workspace and remind you of the benefits of designing your own office. When figuring out where to put everything in your extra bedroom/home office, you might have to play around with the furniture layout a bit.

Store Extra Towels & Bed Linens Under the Bed

A window seat is an excellent space saver in your home office guest room. Window seats can serve as additional seating or storage area for your guests. It could also be a comfortable work space for you, and it adds more texture and visual interest to the room. Neutrals are your best friend when you're unsure of what paint color to choose. Gray has been a trending classic for years, and it's still a great choice for a guest room or office since it lends itself well to any other colors you may use. Choose a light shade of gray to help your space feel open and bright.

With the guesswork out of the way, I used my favorite colors from the HOME by Sherwin-Williams Simply Blissful Color Collection to design my new office/guest room space. Seeing the HGTV Dream Home 2020 was like my eyes were suddenly exposed to a whole new level of home decor ideas. Y’all know from my previous home decor posts that I love neutrals. I’ve really wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and incorporate more color… but I just didn’t know how. It’s super functional as a home office, and when we slept here, it was comfortable enough to sleep for a longer period of time. And get to do a lot of sewing and crafting project here.

White cabinetry keeps this space feeling light and airy. A large area rug grounds the space while also protecting the wood floor when the murphy bed comes down. This space-saving contemporary home office doubles as a guest space. A corner desk features upper and lower shelving, functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The desk area is concentrated in an alcove so that guests won't feel like they're sleeping in your office when they stay the night. On the hunt for guest bedroom/office ideas that can make a space look more cohesive? A neutral rug will provide a grounding effect while adding subtle texture, warmth and softness underfoot.

Linen is another fan favorite that's sure to be a hit with your overnight guests. Sourced from the fibers of European flax plants, the textile is laid back yet luxurious, exceptionally breathable and even naturally moisture wicking. If your space is small, it might be challenging to fit a bed in with your desk and other furnishings. Sofas can double as a place for you to relax and for your guests to get some sleep. You work from home and frequently have overnight guests, but you only have one spare room that isn't currently occupied. Create a multipurpose space that serves as your place of work during the week and a relaxing retreat for your guests on the weekends. A modern home office in Sydney, Australia features a hidden fold-down bed. Bookshelf wallcovering alongside the stairs adds visual interest and warmth to the space.

Keep the Design Light & Minimal

When it comes to home offices that do double and triple duty, the focus is obviously on utilization of space and multitasking. But let this not become the sole consideration and plan for the room just like you would in the case of the bedroom or the living space. Add a TV and an entertainment console to give it a pleasant, more casual vibe. This might even allow you to turn the home office-guestroom into a family room as well! Lighting is another key aspect, and you will need an intelligent blend of ambient and focused lighting so that your home office does not feel dark and moody.

A daybed can work well for those looking to save space. Similar to a pull-out sofa, you can use this multi-use piece for sleeping or sitting. You can also use it as a chaise lounge if you ever want to work off your laptop while laying back and stretching out your legs. Not everyone is a fan of stark minimalism, of course, and that’s totally fine. Fabric storage bins downplay the office feel that the room might take on over time.

Instead of using curtains, I opted for a light weight shade. I have a post with video on my desk built-in, so check out this DIY desk built-in tutorialif interested. For my desk built-in, I used two IKEA ALEX drawer units, and a long table top above. It’s all digital printables that’s why it’s so affordable.

More and more people are working from home at least part time, and as such, need a designated place to take care of business. If you've got a spare room you'd like to have ready for the occasional overnight visitor, you might consider combining thetwo. When guests come, I can empty or swap those baskets to give them space to put their things. There is also a closet in this room, but if you don’t have a closet, make sure to find somewhere for guests to hang their clothes or at least set their suitcases. To ensure maximum productivity and relaxation, make sure to layer the room’s lighting. Include task lights in the office area , so that you can see what you’re doing, but choose soft white lightbulbs as opposed to harsh, bright white light.
